What is Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe?

The Mod Podge range is incredibly extensive and versatile. One of the most special products is Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe. Like all Mod Podge formulas, this is an all-in-one glue, sealer and finish. But unlike the other formulas, Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe makes your projects washable in the... dishwasher (surprise!). So, with Dishwasher Safe, you have the possibility to apply decoupage to, for example, tableware.

Wat do you use Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe for?

If you want to be able to wash a decorated object, Dishwasher Safe is the right formula for you. Embellish plates, bowls, platters, coasters, mugs, glasses: basically anything you eat or drink from and then want to have rinsed clean by the dishwasher! Applying Mod Podge can be done with a brush, a foam brush or with your fingers.

On what surfaces can you use Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe?

You can apply Dishwasher Safe to glass, ceramics and metal. These are materials that you can safely put in the dishwasher. Of course, you could also use Dishwasher Safe on other surfaces (such as wood) in the absence of regular Mod Podge, just make sure that your wooden decorations or utensils do not end up in the dishwasher. This water-based formula is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, although there is also a special Mod Podge type for outdoor projects: Outdoor.

Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe vs. Outdoor

The Outdoor-formula is very water-resistant but not waterproof. The same goes for Dishwasher Safe. So you might ask yourself: why can't I use Dishwasher Safe for outdoor projects? This is because the Dishwasher Safe formula is made to withstand immersion in warm soapy water and is not suitable for exposure to rain and sun. So use Dishwasher Safe for household projects that you want to be able to wash and Mod Podge Outdoor for outdoor use only (the consistency of this formula is thicker for a reason). 

How do you apply Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe?

Clean the surface of your project by rinsing it thoroughly with warm soapy water and then letting it dry. You can also use alcohol or an all-purpose cleaner to clean and degrease your project. Use a soft brush to apply the Mod Podge. While the Mod Podge is still wet, place the pattern on the surface and smooth it out. Avoid applying Dishwasher Safe to areas that come into contact with food or your lips, because although it is water-based and non-toxic, it is not approved as food safe. Apply it, for example, to the back of a glass plate or a few centimetres from the rim of a cup. Let it dry for 1-2 hours and then apply 2 or 3 more coats. Allow your project to dry for 28 days. After that, you can use your project and wash it in the top rack of the dishwasher.

Why do you have to put your projects in the top rack of the dishwasher?

Many dishwashers have a heating element underneath the lower rack. That element gives off a lot of heat and can get hot enough to melt plastics. The upper rack is further from the heating element, so the items placed there are not exposed to as much heat. Items that are suitable for the upper rack can take the heat from the upper rack but may melt or deform on the lower rack.
