What is Mod Podge Outdoor?

Mod Podge Outdoor is just like any other type of Mod Podge: an all-in-one glue, sealer and finish. The difference lies in the fact that Outdoor is a special formula that best protects your decoupage projects from the elements. Within the Mod Podge range, Outdoor is the most water-resistant formula. So you can place your projects outside with confidence.

What can you use Mod Podge Outdoor for?

For most outdoor projects, Outdoor is the perfect formula. Mod Podge Outdoor is water and sun-resistant. To achieve hard-wearing results, you will need to apply a new layer every few months.

Is Mod Podge Outdoor waterproof?

No. This may sound contradictory, but Mod Podge Outdoor is not waterproof. Nor does it offer complete protection against the rays of the sun. The formula does make your project very water and UV resistant. So you can put your projects outside, but long-term exposure to the sun and rain will eventually be harmful. For projects that aren’t exposed to the elements 24 hours a day, Outdoor is perfect. Think of a garden table that is mainly covered and only exposed to the occasional rain shower. For best results, apply a new layer every month. If you want to make sure that your project can withstand even the heaviest rain apply a special varnish (available in a matte or glossy finish).

How do you apply Mod Podge Outdoor?

Mod Podge Outdoor is thicker than the other formulas. Because of this, brush strokes can be more visible during the application, which is normal. To minimize them, use a special decoupage brush and lightly sand each coat with some steel wool before applying the next. Let each layer dry for at least one hour. Allow your project to fully dry for 72 hours (in a dry room).

On what surfaces do you use Mod Podge Outdoor?

Use this formula on wood, glass, terracotta, concrete and tin. Decorate clay flowerpots, nameplates, birdhouses, garden chairs and stones. For use with napkins, a light-coloured surface works best. If the surface is quite dark, it's best to apply a primer with acrylic paint first to lighten it.

Mod Podge Outdoor vs. Dishwasher Safe

The Outdoor formula is highly water-resistant but not waterproof. The same goes for Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe. You might wonder: can I use Dishwasher Safe for outdoor projects instead? No, because the Dishwasher Safe formula is designed to withstand immersion in warm soapy water, not exposure to rain and sun. So use Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe for household projects you want to be able to wash and Mod Podge Outdoor only for outside (the consistency of this formula is thicker for a reason). 

Is it true that you can decorate shoes with Mod Podge Outdoor?

Yes, you can use Mod Podge Outdoor to apply the decoupage technique to your shoes. Thanks to the water-resistant formula, your custom-made shoes will last. Make sure to clean your shoes with a wet cloth to keep them at their best.
