• (Quilling) paper: Pre-cut paper strips in various widths, available in a range of colours and finishes. You can also use regular coloured paper and cut your strips for quilling yourself.
• Quilling needle or tool: This is a tool with a metal or plastic handle and a thin, split tip for wrapping the paper around. Electric quilling tools are also available that make rolling faster. However, these tools are not necessary. As long as you can make or fold a round shape and glue it down, you’re set to get started.
• Glue: Fine, pointed glue pens or white PVA glue are ideal for accurately applying glue to the delicate paper strips.
• Tweezers: Useful for manipulating and positioning small details or paper figures.
• Scissors: For cutting paper or adjusting strips to size.
• Optional, circle template or sizing board: A board with various pre-formed grooves to consistently make circles and other shapes.

Quilling: step by step

1. Choose your paper: Pick the paper you want to quill with. For the best results, choose different thicknesses and colours. To start, it's easier to work with slightly wider strips, as they're easier to shape.
2. Prepare your paper strip: Cut or trim the paper strip to the desired length and width. In this, you may vary as much as you’d like. The more variations, the more versatile your artwork.
3. Roll up your paper strip: Use a quilling tool if necessary. Secure the end of the paper and slowly start turning with the tool. This will gradually roll the paper into a tight coil. Are you working without a quilling tool? No problem! You can also roll the paper strip by hand.
4. Shape the coil: If you've used a tool, remove the rolled paper strip from the tool. Allow the tightly rolled strip of paper to relax slightly to achieve the desired size and shape. Pinch and shape the paper into forms such as a teardrop, heart, oval, or square.
5. Glue the roll: Apply a small amount of glue to the end of the paper strip to secure the coil.
6. Assemble the design: Combine different shapes and colors to build your design. Start by laying the shapes on a flat surface in the desired pattern or design.
7. Glue onto the substrate: Once satisfied with your design, gently glue each quilled shape onto your chosen substrate, such as a card, canvas, or photo frame.
