October is home decor month: the best home decor DIYs according to the latest trends

As the days get shorter and the leaves slowly turn golden, you automatically spend more time indoors. The summery outdoor life makes room for the autumn and winter months inside. It is, therefore, no surprise that, for many people, October is a good time to turn their house into a warm and pleasant home again. For several years now, October has been entirely dedicated to living. In this blog, we will tell you more about October Living Month, what the living trends for 2022 are and how you can give your interior a new look by making your home decor accessories sustainable and budget proof!

What is October Living Month?

During October Living Month, furniture brands announce the colours and living trends for the coming year. They do this by showing their new collection at various interior design fairs throughout the country. They show what new designs, colours and materials are coming and what the latest living trends are. Armed with this information, you can start working at home. Further on in this blog, we have listed the most important trends for 2022 for you.

With all the inspiration surrounding October Living Month, there are plenty of reasons to make your home extra cosy and comfortable. Are you ready for a new style in your living room? Or are you about to move and can you start with an empty canvas? Nothing is more fun than thinking about the ideal interior design, browsing through interior design shops and scouring Pinterest for home decor projects!

From new furniture to home accessories

Of course, you can go all the way and give your interior a complete makeover. Paint that white wall in the living room in a shade of thyme green, replace the two old chairs with a fine sofa. Or choose a completely new layout by putting your dining table in an unexpected place. But even without spending a lot of money and with a few minor adjustments, you can give your interior a completely new look. You can easily change the atmosphere in your home by adapting (some) accessories.

Home accessories increase the atmosphere, it provides the connection between the different elements in a room and makes your house a home. Think of new cushions, a collection of nice vases, a cosy seasonal board on the table, a beautiful painting on the wall or a nice pendant for the window. So if you are ready for a new look, but do not want to spend too much money, renewing accessories is a good start.

When it comes to home accessories, you don't have to be limited by the selection in the shops, of course. A little creativeness makes beautiful homemade deco! By providing your unique home accessories, you can make your interior as you wish. That is not only fun to do, but also good for your wallet. Moreover, this way, you can perfectly match the new accessories with the colours and materials of your interior. To get you started, we have collected one or more fun DIYs for every home decor trend.

Home trends 2022

After a turbulent time, we are gradually resuming our normal lives and are looking forward to a new year full of new opportunities and possibilities. This is reflected in the living trends of 2022. The overarching theme for the coming year is 'a fresh start'. Because we have been home more than ever in the past period (by necessity), the house has also taken on a different function. We have experienced what it is like to work from home and live together more intensively with our housemates. Make your home even cosier with the help of the following trends and matching DIYs.

Trend 1: Peaceful & sustainable oasis

With the busy social lives we lead, creating a peaceful home is very important. In terms of interior design, this translates into a beautiful base of neutral tones, such as white, beige, grey and black. Combined with minimalist furnishings, these colours create tranquillity and space. Few frills and only a few large pieces of quality furniture. Instead of 'fast fashion' that only lasts one season, choose a timeless sofa. Mindful shopping and a conscious choice for sustainable products characterize this trend in living. Recycled materials are also often used. Think of a large table made of waste hardwood, hanging lamps made of used beer casks and vases of empty cans. For inspiration, check out our blog about the best vases and plant pots made from recycled materials.

Trend 2: Global

By combining furniture and accessories from Africa to Sweden in your home, you create a very special worldly effect. You can, as it were, travel around the world in your own home. Dream away with beautiful vistas, artistic works of art and lovely patterns. You can easily make them yourself, like a paper landscape. Or get to work with paint and create your colour pour art. This technique turns an empty canvas into a painting with a beautiful marble effect.

Do you have an empty wall or a boring piece of furniture to pimp? If so, we recommend the home decor templates from FolkArt. These templates are also ideal for decorating cushions, crockery and other accessories. Go for a real wow factor by using contrasting materials and colours. Typical for this trend is the combination of raw wood with chic brass, sturdy concrete and sturdy fabrics. But the contrast is also sought in colour by combining intense colours with earth tones.

Trend 3: Round and soft

Partly as a result of the corona crisis, we have come to value a cosy home more. This includes light colours, organic shapes and cuddly fabrics such as wool and linen. This trend can be seen in pastel shades, round tables and plaids for a comfortable look. Round tables also promote cosiness. Nobody sits at one end of the table, and there are no hard edges to bump into. This light style is also known as the Bright Bubble. It stands for peace and new beginnings. In short, in 2022, we're going for a friendly interior.

Line art is also part of this trend, where the illustrations consist of simple lines and abstract shapes on a white background. This creative art form is all about simplicity. Give your interior a personal touch with a self-made line illustration. All you need is a sheet of paper, a pencil and a photo frame to hang your creation. Make a nice drawing yourself or search online for an image that appeals to you.

Trend 4: Pure nature

Where better to unwind than in nature? Whether it's a walk on the beach or a hike in the woods, the soothing look and colours of nature make it easier for you to relax. It helps to clear your head, creating space for new, creative ideas. Bringing the outdoors in is, therefore, a popular interior design trend that continues this year. The open and free feeling that you experience outside, we take inside. No enclosed spaces, but an open and light space with many windows is preferred. To create privacy, you can use flexible partitions of canvas, glass or curtains.

You also see a lot of marble, granite, (scaffolding) wood, reed and bamboo. These materials give the interior a natural and tough look. The decoration consists of several plants (motifs), earthenware pots and all kinds of accessories in green and brown shades. The nice thing is that you can use this trend in many different ways in homemade accessories. You can work with natural pigments for beautiful watercolour wall decoration, use a wooden form as the basis for your project (e.g. wooden spoon pyrography) or use jute rope to decorate pots and vases.

Create your home decorations

Do you already have an idea of what you are going to make? Home decor can also include things that are both decorative and practical, such as a luxury drinks board, decorated with a wood burner. It looks great in the kitchen and comes in handy during drinks parties. Get together with friends or family to work. Plan a craft day and collect the necessary materials in advance. You can choose from a wide range of materials, including wood, felt, polystyrene foam, paper, cardboard, jute, foam, wool and iron (wire). By combining different materials, you get an original and surprising result.

Making your decorations is fun and often easier than you think. Need extra inspiration? On our DIY inspiration page, you will find the best DIY ideas for in and around the house.
