From the basics to inspiring ideas for your first projects, you'll find it all here at Vaessen Creative. So grab your yarn, and let's start knotting!

What is macramé, anyway?

Before we dive into the details, let's take a brief look at what macramé is. Macramé is a knotting technique in which threads are tied to create decorative and functional objects. It's an ancient art form practised worldwide and has become popular again as a hobby. With just a few knots, you can create beautiful designs, from plant hangers to wall hangings and much more.

What do you need for macramé?

Before starting your first macramé project, it's helpful to know what materials you'll need. Here's a list of the essential supplies:

  • Yarn or twine: Choose a sturdy yarn suitable for macramé, such as a cotton cord, specially made macramé cord or jute twine.
  • Scissors: Sharp scissors are essential to cut your yarn neatly.
  • Tape measure: A tape measure comes in handy for cutting your yarn to the correct length.
  • Hanging rod or ring: This is optional but helpful for most projects, such as dreamcatchers or wall hangings. Consider a simple wooden rod, a beautiful branch, or metal rings.
  • Pattern or instructions: For beginners, it's helpful to follow a simple pattern or step-by-step instructions to learn the basics.

The three basic knots in macramé

Most basic macramé projects consist of just three easy-to-learn basic knots that are repeated to create beautiful patterns. Below, we carefully explain these knots.

  • Lark's head knot: This is a simple knot used to attach yarn to a hanging ring or other attachment point. It creates a loop that is used as a base for further knots. To make this knot, fold your yarn precisely in half and hold it at the small loop you create. Then, hang the loop over your attachment point and pull the two hanging pieces of yarn through the loop. Tighten it up, and you're done with this first knot.
  • Square knot: This is one of the most commonly used knots in macramé and is formed by crossing two opposing halves of yarn over each other and then tying them together. The result is a flat knot used to connect strands of yarn.
  • Half hitch knot: This knot is formed by wrapping a single strand of yarn around another strand and then pulling it through the loop created. It's often used to add texture and detail to macramé work.

The following video clearly explains the three basic knots. Watch the video and, at the same time, try to imitate the knots to master them quickly. Once you've mastered these knots, you can create many patterns consisting of these three basic knots. You can also practice with patterns and video instructions that will teach you even more beautiful knots.

Tips from Vaessen Creative

Now that you've gathered all the supplies and practised the basic knots, it's time to start! Here are some final tips from us before you begin your first real project:

  1. Choose a simple pattern or project to start with, such as a plant hanger or keychain.
  2. Cut your yarn to the correct lengths according to the pattern and have them ready before you begin.
  3. Make your knots by carefully following the step-by-step instructions in your pattern. If necessary, refer back to a video that demonstrates the knots again.
  4. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; all knots can be undone, and you can try again.
  5. Be patient and practice regularly; macramé requires some practice, but the result is worth it. In no time, you'll be creating the most beautiful macramé creations!

Your first macramé project

Now that you know the basics, here's a simple macramé project to make! We're going to make a simple plant hanger, and you'll only need the lark's head knot and square knot for this easy project.

Materials:

  • 4 strands of yarn of equal length
  • Hanging ring
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors Steps:

Step 1 Preparation:

Measure and cut the four strands of yarn to the desired length. A good guideline is about 3-4 times the length of your final plant hanger. Make sure all strands are cut evenly.

Step 2 Attaching to the hanging ring:

Fold each of the four strands of yarn in half, one by one, and place the folded loop over the hanging ring or rod. Pull the ends of the strands through the loop and tighten to secure the knot. You have now made four lark's head knots, giving you eight strands to work with.

Step 3 First row of knots:

Start by making the first row of knots. Take two strands that are adjacent to each other and tie them together in a square knot about 10-15 centimetres below the hanging ring. Repeat this with the remaining strands so you have four pairs of strands tied.

Step 4 Continuing the knots:

Continue making rows of knots by taking two strands from adjacent pairs and tying them together about 5-7 centimetres below the previous row of knots. Alternate which strands you use for a nice effect. For this, take the right strand of the first tied pair and the left strand of the second pair and tie these two together so the following knots come in the middle of the first row of knots. Repeat this process until you reach the desired length of the plant hanger.

Step 5 Finishing:

Once you've reached the desired length, tie all the strands together at the bottom of the plant hanger to create a sturdy base. Trim any excess yarn and leave a small fringe.

Step 6 Hang and enjoy:

Place the plant pot in the middle of the hanger and hang the plant hanger in a suitable place in your home. Admire your work and enjoy the beautiful addition to your decor!

Congratulations! You've just completed your very first macramé project. We hope you enjoyed the process, are proud of this first piece, and that it's the start of many beautiful macramé adventures in the future.
