Quilling: Art with paper strips

Quilling: Art with paper strips

Art doesn't have to be difficult. Quilling offers the opportunity to transform simple strips of paper into the most unique works of art. A creative hobby doesn't have to be expensive. All you need is paper, glue, and a creative mind.

The latter isn't even a requirement. Vaessen Creative helps you with every aspect of quilling. Discover the materials you need, how to use them, and get inspired by our examples.

What is quilling?

Quilling is a paper art where paper strips are rolled, shaped, and glued to create various decorative designs. This age-old technique is used to make crafts such as greeting cards, jewellery, and wall decorations.

Supplies for quilling

Quilling is super easy, partly because you need so few materials. You may even have all the elements at home to get started right away. But just like any creative hobby, you can make it as elaborate as you want. Below are the supplies needed for this creative hobby. We'll start with the most comprehensive setup.

  • (Quilling) paper: Pre-cut paper strips in various widths, available in a range of colours and finishes. You can also use regular coloured paper and cut your strips for quilling yourself.
  • Quilling needle or tool: This is a tool with a metal or plastic handle and a thin, split tip for wrapping the paper around. Electric quilling tools are also available that make rolling faster. However, these tools are not necessary. As long as you can make or fold a round shape and glue it down, you’re set to get started.
  • Glue: Fine, pointed glue pens or white PVA glue are ideal for accurately applying glue to the delicate paper strips.
  • Tweezers: Useful for manipulating and positioning small details or paper figures.
  • Scissors: For cutting paper or adjusting strips to size.
  • Optional, circle template or sizing board: A board with various pre-formed grooves to consistently make circles and other shapes.
  • Needles and pins: To secure paper strips while drying or create special shapes.
  • Craft mat: A craft mat protects your working surface and makes it easier to pick up paper strips.
  • Ruler: Helps with measuring and cutting paper strips to equal lengths.
  • Storage bins or boxes: For organising and storing paper strips and other small supplies.

Quilling: step by step

Have you got your materials ready? Setup complete? Then, it's time to get started.

How do you get from single sheets of paper to a quilling work of art? We at Vaessen Creative guide you step by step.

  1. Choose your paper: Pick the paper you want to quill with. For the best results, choose different thicknesses and colours. To start, it's easier to work with slightly wider strips, as they're easier to shape.
  2. Prepare your paper strip: Cut or trim the paper strip to the desired length and width. In this, you may vary as much as you’d like. The more variations, the more versatile your artwork.
  3. Roll up your paper strip: Use a quilling tool if necessary. Secure the end of the paper and slowly start turning with the tool. This will gradually roll the paper into a tight coil. Are you working without a quilling tool? No problem! You can also roll the paper strip by hand.
  4. Shape the coil: If you've used a tool, remove the rolled paper strip from the tool. Allow the tightly rolled strip of paper to relax slightly to achieve the desired size and shape. Pinch and shape the paper into forms such as a teardrop, heart, oval, or square.
  5. Glue the roll: Apply a small amount of glue to the end of the paper strip to secure the coil.
  6. Assemble the design: Combine different shapes and colors to build your design. Start by laying the shapes on a flat surface in the desired pattern or design.
  7. Glue onto the substrate: Once satisfied with your design, gently glue each quilled shape onto your chosen substrate, such as a card, canvas, or photo frame.

Vaessen Creative's quilling tips

  • Practice makes perfect and will teach you the most, but before you begin, here are some tips we'd like to share to ensure the best possible outcome.Choose the right materials

Selecting the right materials is crucial for a successful quilling project. Use lightweight paper that is flexible enough to roll without breaking. Quilling paper is available in various widths, which affect the size of the rolled shapes. Start with wider strips (like 3mm wide) that are easier to handle when you're still learning.

  • Use appropriate tools

A good quilling tool isn't essential, but it is handy. There are two main types: a needle tool, which provides more control for advanced techniques, and a slotted tool, which is easier for beginners. Additionally, tweezers, scissors, and glue with fine applicators are essential for precise work.

  • Work with a plan

Before you begin, it's handy to sketch a design on paper. This can serve as a blueprint for placing the quilling shapes. This way, you can visualise how the result will look and what shapes and sizes you'll need.

  • Master the basic shapes
  • First, learn the basic shapes like circles, teardrops, ovals, and squares. These shapes are the building blocks for more complex designs. Practice these shapes until you can make them consistently before moving on to more challenging designs.
  • Mind the glue

Use glue sparingly. Too much glue can saturate the paper and ruin the appearance of your project. A fine-point glue applicator or a toothpick can help accurately apply a small amount of glue.

  • Experiment with colour

Don't be afraid to play with colours. Quilling offers an excellent opportunity to experiment with colour combinations and patterns, resulting in striking and vibrant crafts.

  • Practice patience

Quilling is an activity that requires patience. Take your time with each piece, and don't rush through the process. Carefully finishing each component will result in a much more excellent result.

  • Protect your work

Once you've finished a project, it's essential to protect it. Consider sealing your work with a clear acrylic spray or another protective medium. This helps preserve colours and prevents the paper from warping over time.

  • Keep learning and inspiring

The world of quilling is vast and constantly evolving. Look for tutorials, workshops, and online communities where you can learn new techniques, get inspired by others' work, and share your creations.

You can create the most unique creations with just paper, glue, and a little creativity. With our step-by-step guidance and handy tips, you'll create beautiful quilling works in no time. So grab your supplies, and let’s get started.
